Mermaid: June 13

Our summer concert will feature Phaedra Jarrett's "Mermaid," a fun twist on Hans Christian Andersen's famous fairy tale set in the 1980s. This contemporary ballet explores the themes of isolation, prejudice, identity, and acceptance. As always, SYB will perform in tandem with the Academy of Dance in the Summer Concert.

Peter and the Wolf - January 11

SYB presents an afternoon of fun for the whole family! First, enjoy the beloved folktale "Peter and the Wolf," narrated by David Bowie and featuring the familiar score by Prokofiev. Children will love the comical adventure, learn about musical instruments, and have the opportunity to meet our colorful animal characters!

Following this short ballet, Academy of Dance students led by choreographer-in-residence Phaedra Jarrett will present a lecture/demonstration about how choreographers create ballets, featuring structured improvisation by students and an example of a student-choreographed work.

This production is made possible in part by a SAGA grant from Spokane Arts.

SYB has produced a number of contemporary ballets, including:

- Sleeping Rosa

- A Midsummer Night's Dream

- The Dancing Princesses

- Mermaid

- Cindy Rella

- Alice in Wondrousland
