Summer Programs

Intermediate/Advanced Workshop

July 21st - July 31st

18 hours per week Monday - Thursday for two weeks

Intermediate/Advanced Level
Open to Levels 6 - 8 and Professional

This workshop will be an intensive designed to move the dancer ahead both technically and artistically. There will be daily classes (Monday through Thursday) in Conditioning, Technique, Modern Improv, and Pointe. After a short break, the dancers will begin rehearsal on two short ballets choreographed on them by Vanessa Van Wormer the first week and by Kristen Potts the second week. Incidentally, this is the same format that is used by American Ballet Theater for their summer workshops.

One piece will be classical in nature. This will further enhance the dancer’s ability to perform in the classical style. This piece will contain group and solo work. Dancers will be challenged to excel past current strengths. They will be exposed to new movement vocabulary that will be introduced in classes and then utilized in the choreography. The second piece will be contemporary in style. This will give the dancers an opportunity to explore a movement vocabulary and aesthetic to which they have not yet been exposed. Being proficient in the contemporary style of movement is a necessity for all ballet dancers now. Even the most classical of ballet companies have contemporary works in their repertory. Although based on classical technique, this style of dance can be very challenging for a developing dancer. This style is not related to Jazz. It is an outgrowth of Modern Dance. Exposure to and work in this environment can often lead a dancer to a “breakthrough” in their artistic development. In order to further facilitate this growth, there will be a Modern Improv class twice a week. This class will be a lot of fun while offering the dancers an environment in which to explore myriad movement qualities engendering a sense of freedom in their movement.
